You’re probably aware that eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies is good for you. Smoothies are an easy way to incorporate more of the “good stuff” into your diet.
I love using frozen fruits in my smoothies. It saves me a lot of time and makes smoothies even more refreshing and delicious!
A little down below you’ll find my favorite frozen fruit smoothie recipes. But before we’ll get to the recipes, here are a few tips on why and how to make frozen fruit smoothies
Why Use Frozen Fruits in Smoothies?
It’s so convenient!
Most supermarkets sell frozen smoothie packs these days.
There’s no need to wash or cut the fruits. Everything is done for you already. It’s a huge timesaver!
You won’t even have to defrost the fruits before making smoothies. Just open the bag, add some to your blender and you’re good.
Just because it’s convenient doesn’t mean it’s less healthy!
Fruits are picked and frozen at peak ripeness. Studies show again and again that frozen fruits retain at least as many vitamins, minerals, as fresh fruits. Some fruits can even retain more vitamins when they’re frozen than when they’re bought fresh.
Using more frozen fruits also means less spoilage.
Frozen fruits are good for months, instead of just days. You can easily enjoy your favorite fruits at any time of the year.
Using frozen fruits actually makes your smoothies taste better.
Some people like to use ice cubes in their smoothies, I like using frozen fruits. A chilled smoothie simply tastes better, there’s no question about it. Save the ice, and add some frozen fruits instead.
How to Make a Frozen Fruit Smoothie
Making frozen fruit smoothies isn’t rocket science. A little down below, you’ll find my favorite frozen fruit smoothie recipes.

If you want to create your own smoothie recipes, here’s how you can do it.
If you want to avoid the five major mistakes people make when making smoothies, check out this article: How Long Do Smoothies Last?
1. Start with a Liquid Base
When we’re making frozen fruit smoothies, we want to start with a base. It’s best to always have some liquid in our smoothies. One serving usually needs about ½ – 1 cup of liquid. Good options are:
- filtered water
- coconut water, maple water
- nut milk (almond milk, cashew milk, macadamia milk, etc.)
- soy milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, rice milk, etc.
- dairy milk
- fruit juice (apple juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, etc.)
The lowest calorie version is obviously plain water. Unsweetened nut milk or coconut water can also be a healthy, low-fat, and low-calorie choice.
Adding too much fruit juice may spike your blood sugar levels, so it’s best not to overdo it.
Also, be careful with coconut milk (it’s not the same as coconut water), as it’s high in fat and calories.
2. Add Some Frozen Fruits (& Fresh Fruits)
After you’ve chosen your liquid base, it’s time to add some fruits to your smoothie. I’d recommend using both frozen fruits and fresh fruits in smoothies.
If you’re using too many frozen ingredients, it can make your smoothie too slushy.
If you don’t use any ice or frozen fruits, your smoothie won’t taste as good as it could.
Every smoothie I make will have some frozen ingredients in it.
You can completely skip the ice, and add some frozen fruits or veggies instead.
You’ve heard that right, you could also use frozen vegetables. Here’s an article I’ve written about the topic: Can You Use Frozen Vegetables in Smoothies?
Here are my favorite frozen fruits for smoothies:
- berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc.)
- mango
- pineapple
- peaches
- cherries
- banana
- pomegranate
- grapes
You can either buy bags of frozen fruits in your supermarket or freeze fruits yourself.
I love freezing bananas for my smoothies. Just peel the bananas and slice them. Put the slices in a bag and freeze them the day before. It’s super easy to make!
3. Add Some Thickening Ingredients
To get that delicious, creamy texture we all crave, we’ll need to add some special ingredients. My favorite thickening ingredients are:
- avocado
- yogurt (I like to use Greek yogurt)
- oatmeal
- silken tofu
- nut butter (almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, etc.)
- protein powder
Avocado tastes great in almost any smoothie. It’ll give your smoothie a nice thick texture. Avocados are rich in healthy fats and make your smoothies so much more delicious.
I also like using Greek yogurt in my smoothies. Greek yogurt contains almost two times the protein of regular yogurt and less than half the amount of sodium. For some delicious ideas, check out these Greek yogurt smoothie recipes.
4. Add Some Extras
Now you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to add some more flavor to your smoothie. Experiment with these ingredients to make your smoothies special:
- cinnamon
- vanilla extract
- cocoa powder
- seeds (chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, etc.)
- nuts (walnuts, cashews, peanuts, hazelnuts, etc.)
- leafy greens or other veggies
Adding seeds and nuts to your smoothies can help you boost your fiber intake even further. They also contain a good amount of heart-healthy fats.
If you want to take your health one step further, consider adding leafy greens to your smoothies. Leafy greens like kale, Swiss chard, spinach are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.
If you’re new to making green smoothies, start slow and work your way up. Adding just a few leaves of fresh spinach to your smoothie is a good start!
Vanilla extract, organic cocoa powder, and cinnamon are not only healthy but can actually make your smoothies more delicious as well.
How to Make Your Smoothies Taste Better
If you’re using too many leafy greens, smoothies can end up tasting too bitter.
Sweet fruits like bananas, pineapples, mango can add lots of natural sweetness to your smoothies.
I especially like bananas and mango (fresh or frozen), they make almost every smoothie taste better.
Strawberries and oranges can also be a great choice for masking bitter flavors.
If you’re just starting with smoothies, you can add honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup to make smoothies taste like a dessert.
Once you’re more experienced, you can reduce the amount of sugar in your smoothies and add more leafy greens or other veggies.
The less sugar (honey, syrup, etc.), the more natural ingredients you’ll use, the healthier your smoothie will be.
